Chanting has been used throughout history to plunge into the deepest mystery of the universe-the question of who we are beyond the surface level of existence. Many souls have aspired for God through the use of mantra or chant. The calling and yearning for God is the heart of Bhakti yoga. Sri Ramakrishna said that one can realize the Mother through intense restlessness, the restlessness that a drowning man feels for a breath of air.

By chanting God's name, the reality of the earth, its supporting bull and the heavens are revealed. Chanting is the first step. By saying the name of the Mother, we remember Ma until eventually all we ever see is Her. We're too busy right now playing with the toys of the world, but when we're tired and it's getting dark, we start to cry. When that crying becomes unbearable, it becomes our greatest treasure. That's when the Mother can no longer stay away. She has to come and embrace us in Her arms.
